INFODUMP - Blakfish

↑↑ [OPEN THE POST TO SEE THE FULL INFODUMP!] ↑↑

(last updated 07/20/2025)

many small artists i grow to love are incredibly sparse for information online; the INFODUMP post series is my attempt to host as much of my personal research regarding these artists as i can. these posts are intended to be returned to and updated!
i try to add sources where i can (using the "[src]" format for readability's sake), but please understand that this is fan-created work and it is not official in any capacity. thanks!

Blakfish
were a mathcore (math rock/hardcore) band from Birmingham, England formed in 2000 by school friends Sam Manville, Thomas Peckett, Richard Lee, and Robert 'Wiz' Wisely. The group hosted a myriad of homemade releases as well as a major-label EP and album before the departure of Manville led to the band's untimely breakup in early 2010.

Discography

*listed in chronological order

Various early CDs (2002-ish)

Type: Album(?)
Released: 2002
Format(s): CD
Known tracks:

Notes: Frankly, information regarding Blakfish's super early days is super fucked, so I'm grouping a bunch of the unclear stuff here in one single entry. The older .co.uk iteration of the Blakfish website lists the above tracks on a merch page for their "albums" (plural), of which were available to purchase.[src] A newspaper clipping from around the same time also mentions that the band had already released two CDs at that point.[src] I don't think that either of the two CDs mentioned are the self-titled Blakfish album, but I also don't have any way to confirm that theory.

Notes: Featured alongside the Dirty Import EP on an archived blakfish.com MP3 downloads page from 2004 is the cover for a self-titled Blakfish album alongside a 13-song track listing.[src] It's unknown if this album was ever released publicly (especially because the site contains no song download links), but five tracks from the album are currently circulating online now, meaning these recordings or earlier iterations were made available at some point.

          Unreleased material

*unreleased—in this context—refers to anything that doesn't appear on a mainline release by the band or on a compilation. this section is a mix of circulating and non-circulating material.

          Cliff Hanger (unreleased EP; 2004)

          Type: EP
Recorded: November 2004 at the Arthur Terry School, Sutton Coldfield, UK[src]
          Known tracks:
          • "Retrotard"
          • "The Stallone Relationship"
          • [unnamed acoustic recording] (1:54)
          • [non-specified live recording]
          Personnel:
          • Becky [unknown last name] - mixing
          AudioYouTube
Notes: A November 2004 blakfish.com blog post by Wiz sees mention of an EP titled Cliff Hanger, of which had already been recorded and was actively being mixed by "our good friend Becky". The EP was to be made up of two studio recordings ("Retrotard" and "The Stallone Relationship") as well as "the new acoustic song which is yet to be named" and a "live tune". Although there isn't much evidence present to really confirm it, it seems that the unnamed acoustic recording is likely the same as the one currently circulating online.
Live recordings of "Retrotard" and "The Stallone Relationship" were posted on the "videos" section of the site in July of 2004[src][src], but these were seemingly not archived.

          March 2005 recordings (2005)

          Type: EP(?)
          Recorded: March 2005[src]
Notes: A March 2005 blakfish.com blog post by Wiz sees mention of a five-day studio session where the band was "hoping to do 3 or 4 songs" and were planning to "pan the crap out of Dirty Import musically". It's possible that these were the sessions for myforteistimetravel, but that would mean the band would have waited a full year before releasing the recordings.

"Jeremy Kyle is a Marked Man" music video (2008)

          Director: Oliver Jones
Notes: In a June 2020 Facebook live Q&A with Blakfish (timestamp 1:23:07) director Oliver Jones talks with the band about a scrapped music video for "Jeremy Kyle is a Marked Man" from See You in Another City, a video which was fully-shot and almost entirely edited. The video was shot on a £100 budget, half of which was used to rent a double/upright bass used as a prop by Richard Lee. The reason for the video's scrapping is unknown, and Blakfish would ultimately never release a music video of any kind.

          Champions demos (2008-2009)

          Recorded: (presumably) 2008-2009
          Track listing:
          1. "Vegans" ("The Closer to the Bone, the Sweeter the Meat") (4:33)
          2. "Fashion" ("Your Hair's Straight but Your Boyfriend Ain't"; also referred to as "Pretty as a Peacock") (4:12)
          3. "Distance" ("If the Good Lord Had Intended Us to Walk He Wouldn't Have Invented Roller-Skates") (3:22)
          4. "Butches" (2:29)
          Audio: YouTube
Notes: A set of four demos for Champions, three of which ended up on the album; "Butches" obviously did not make the cut as it is an absurd and nonsensical joke-track. No idea where these were sourced from, they were uploaded to YouTube in 2020 by someone who doesn't reply to comments and has seemingly gone inactive online since.

          Second album demos (2010)

          Released: August 24th, 2012[src]
Recorded: Early 2010[src] (potentially late 2009)
          Known tracks:
          • "Bradley" (3:54)
          • "Garry" (4:04)
          • "Howard" (2:20)
          • "Mark" (3:02)
          • "Rachel" (3:17)
          • "Tina" (3:46)
          • "Last Track" (1:47)
          Audio: YouTube
Notes: Collection of demos intended for the second Blakfish album that never came. These demos were technically officially released, as they were streamed online for twenty-four hours on August 24th, 2012 through Musical Mathematics' website in celebration of "Blakfish Day". The demos were also streamed for Blakfish Day 2014 (August 24th, 2014).[src] The demos were also supposedly uploaded to Soundcloud, but I can't find the original links, so that's also unclear. Chris Common (recording/mixing on Champions) described this set of demos as "five pounds of shit in a one-pound bag", a description of which the band still isn't sure is positive or negative.[src; 27:51]

          Miscellaneous unreleased tracks

            • "Keep Up With You" (2:30)
              • Audio: YouTube
              • No idea what this is or from where it originates!
            • "Last Bus Home" (3:40; total recording 5:01)
              • Audio: YouTube
              • Live recording circulating, likely recorded sometime around 2004 based on the mention of "Clifton" at the end.
            • "Our Home" (2002)
              • Not circulating, confirmed to exist from a newspaper clipping.[src] The song was apparently written about victims of oppression, and it even won "a regional Amnesty International competition to spread the anti-torture message through the arts", of which 14-year-old Sam and Rich won various prizes for. Seriously.
            • "Missing You (The True Meaning of Christmas)" (5:03) (2009)
              • Audio/video: YouTube
              • A (mostly joke) Christmas song released in December 2009 on YouTube and blakfish.com.
            • "Tubelounge" (4:20) (2009)
              • Audio: Internet Archive
              • A recording of Blakfish (alongside Colour) jokingly performing a medley of Tubelord songs on the phone... to Tubelord. Released on the BSM 09 Collection compilation in 2009 under the combined name "Colourfish".

            List of Blakfish songs

an attempt to collate all known songs by the band; for further info/links/sources regarding these songs please see the sections above.
            • known alternate titles are listed separately but direct back to the final song
            • a song's "primary" appearance is listed first, even if it wasn't the first place the song was released
            • compilations are excluded from the appearances section unless deemed noteworthy

            List of Blakfish concerts

an attempt to collate all known performances (concerts, shows, etc.) by the band as well as relevant links to audio/video/imagery. INCOMPLETE AND PROBABLY ALWAYS WILL BE! there's only so much i can dig up on my own. also, "CANCELLED", in this case, doesn't always mean that the whole show was cancelled, only that Blakfish was not playing
